Guwahati, June 21: Assam is set to witness a major boost in transport infrastructure with the construction of a new road-cum-rail bridge across the Brahmaputra River. The Railway authorities have awarded the construction contract to L&T Construction Ltd., marking a significant step forward for the project.
The overall project is estimated to cost around ₹1,400 crore, while the bridge structure itself is expected to account for approximately ₹530 crore. Railway officials have indicated that the project is scheduled for completion by 2029.
According to officials, all required security approvals have been secured and the tender process was finalized in April 2026. Preparatory activities are already underway, including design finalization, geotechnical investigations, and site development work. Pile foundation testing is currently in progress.
The proposed bridge will span nearly 2 kilometers and will feature a composite steel girder design capable of carrying both railway tracks and road traffic. Authorities are also carrying out land-related formalities, including the removal of encroachments on railway property in the Amingaon area, where parts of the project infrastructure will be developed.
Beyond improving connectivity across the Brahmaputra, the bridge is expected to strengthen Assam's railway operations. The project will facilitate the conversion of the remaining single-line railway section between Agiathuri and Kamakhya into a double-line corridor, improving network efficiency and capacity.
Railway officials noted that track doubling work has already advanced up to Kamakhya and has been completed up to Lumding, while further expansion beyond Lumding remains under progress. Once completed, the initiative will contribute to a more extensive double-line railway network across the state.
The new bridge is expected to enhance both passenger and freight movement, reduce transportation bottlenecks, and support economic growth by improving regional connectivity throughout Assam.
